Here is an exercise in varying lighting. Here is a shot with the point and shoot using the flash and a fairly quick shutter speed. Notice the moth is lit (perhaps a little too much) and the background is dark. The flash lit the moth and the quick shutter limited the light from the background. (Using my Nikon D300 would have made this easier but I didn't have it and that is the advantage of a Point and Shoot.
Now the shutter is open longer letting the background become more exposed. I think I managed to turn the flash down a little.
Now the flash if off and the shutter open. the moth is underexposed as there is little light from overhead (I'm in a outdoor hallway) and the background is lit from the ambient light and having the shutter open longer.
Finally the light is properly balanced and the focus is correct. (The others were a little soft.)

What an addition to a building. Not sure which is the addition.
Yes, time to announce. If you notice I missed a day. Since I am posting this about a week or so after the fact, I will go ahead and tell, I missed several days after this and frankly two things lead to to quit. (1) I had too much on my plate with work, and getting ready for upcoming beach wedding. (2) The quality of what I was shooting was not what I wanted. I found my self getting shots for the sake of a shot a day. I felt is had gotten to the point I was taking to many shots for the sake of a shot that didn't show my work or creativity and so I am discontinuing the project. I may occasionally post something noteworthy but in a few more posts, this will be it.
My thanks to Brian Hatch for starting this effort. I truly learned a lot for it.

June bugs everywhere, even though its July! Decided to do a little wildlife shooting. Trouble is they don't sit still but just a second, a least when the camera is on them! So here is one flying along.
Finally he lights and stays. Got him.
OK, W... A...I....T...I...N...G for him to fly again. Now they stay, and stay, and stay. Its hot. Learning patience some more.
Finally he flies off. And yes I know, it might have been a her.
And off they go.

We needed rain but this was too much. Once again, I heard form certain quarters about my doing stupid things like shooting a photo while I am driving.

Some people can't drive. There is a small spot of shade under the tree where I work. Notice that this ONE driver took up THREE spots - In the Shade!!
Yes I know I am behind. I will have an announcement in a few posts. You will know it when you see it.

These were taken below the dam at the old Rocky Mount cotton mill and to be honest, not many came out. The notorious Tarheel blue / grey sky was a killer. The overcast is typical here and for those that Thaven't tied, when something is blown out on a digital image, you can't just color it blue or whatever. Also I didn't bring my tripod so the darkness was enough that shutter speeds made shooting difficult. Anyway, here they are.
This last one was erie as it was as if ghosts of swamp things were arising.

A really cool old house in the Rocky Mount area. I liked the early light (ok not so early) coming through the trees.
Here are some of the other photos I took of the old mill. BTW all of these were taken with a point and shoot.
See if you can spot me in the photo at the left. A little help below.
Now I am not in the photo (ok just a tinsey bit) . Ansel Adams did this once.

Woo boy now I have something different to shoot. My son is building a fire pit for when it turns colder (?? if ??) . He had it taller but had to redo some stuff. I'll keep you appraised of developments.

My other girls (besides my daughter) guarding the fort. The good side of beagles is they are intelligent and inquisitive; the bad side is the are very smart and inquisitive.

Caught this blue sky. Lately a little uninspired but this looked nice. I must say Proj 365 will challenge you to get a photo everyday. Obviously some are when you get the inspiration and others are ... less so.

Another reason I hate living in Rocky Mount. Usually its farm tractors and vehicles pulling flatbeds of tobacco to market creeping down the road and I have to get to work!

Another one of those going down the road and I have to get a photo. This place is the motorcycle bar! Use your imagination and the rest looks just like you imagine! But it has cheap beer!

Going down the road and saw this. Had to turn around and get this. I blacked out the last part of the internet address. The sign is too small to read here but it says "LEARN ABOUT LAND" www.Landinvestment...
Look at the barren land sitting undeveloped.

The intense heat and the lack of rain is making the ants build their mounds higher. My yard is covered with mounds like this. So are my neighbors. Ant killer doesn't work as we aren't getting the main nest with the queen.

Had trouble getting this shot. This is the final shot. Glare from light somewhere was reflecting off the mug. (See bottom photo). Photographing irregular shaped objects with a glaze or glossy finish on them is difficult. If you use flash, the light reflects horribly. Only thing to do is block off the offending light and use a low light lens.
Here is the second shot I took after I block off the light. Shutter speed was way to low. Side issues, tripod and monopod are in the back of my Pilot and I didn't feel like going out to get them. Likewise to using my Nikon D300 which would offer greater flexibility. Laziness was doing me in.
Here is the first shot that clicked it off. Ok but for the glare.

A shot they used for a time capsule. The town of Cary is filing a cornerstone in the the new Arts Culture building soon and they asked Cary Photographic Artists to submit a photo of the intersection to see how things will change in 50 years. I was asked to do the photography. This is the shot.
